The debate about a woman's appearance and sexuality Essay

The discussion about a lady's appearance and sexuality - Essay Example Be that as it may, sexualizing the lady symbolism has prompted expanded shamelessness. Speaker 1: I thoroughly vary with dependent on your help for sexualized symbolism of ladies in mainstream society. Depictions of ladies in present day media are turning out to be hyper-sexualized, and this has such overwhelming repercussions as raised legitimization of brutality against ladies, expanded inappropriate behavior just as expanded enemies of ladies mentalities among guys (American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force, 2007). What's more, expanded body disappointment and dietary issues among guys and females just as decreased sexual fulfillment among people. Speaker 2: I do concur with your declarations on the outcome connected to sexualized portrayal of ladies in the cutting edge culture. In any case, my conflict is on the thought that there is a major issue with sexualized symbolism of ladies since to me I just consider this to be a portrayal of intensity. Isn't that so? What the Receiving Gifts Love Language Means for a Relationship

What the Receiving Gifts Love Language Means for a Relationship Relationships Spouses & Partners Print What the Receiving Gifts Love Language Means for a Relationship By Wendy Rose Gould linkedin Wendy Rose Gould is a lifestyle reporter with over a decade of experience covering health and wellness topics. Learn about our editorial policy Wendy Rose Gould Updated on February 06, 2020 FG Trade/E+/Getty More in Relationships Spouses & Partners Marital Problems LGBTQ Violence and Abuse In 1992, author Gary Chapman revolutionized the way many of us view love with his #1 New York Times best-selling book, The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. In the book, he developed the theory that there are five primary ways romantic partners give and receive love, and that we all speak certain languages better than other languages in our romantic lives. A Brief Overview of Chapman’s Five Love Languages Before digging into the love language of receiving gifts, specifically, let’s first review all five of Chapman’s languages. They’re as follows: Physical Touch, which means that we show and receive love through affirmative touching such as holding hands, cuddling, kissing, and even sex.Quality Time, which means we need to spend meaningful time with our partner to feel loved. This quality time can range from chatting over dinner to going for a long walk.Acts of Service, which translates to showing and feeling love through helpful service, such as cooking a meal or cleaning out the car.Words of Affirmation, which means that more than anything we feel loved or show our love through verbal praise, compliments, and expressions of love.Gift Giving, which means we “speak” our love through presents ranging from small tokens to surprise deliveries. “Approaching relationships from the love language perspective is really productive. By learning how to ‘speak’ each other’s love language, you’re ensuring both people in a relationship feel supported and seen,” says Mark Williams, a licensed mental health counselor and relationship coach. It’s possible, and even likely, that you and your partner don’t speak the same love languages, so learning how to speak their preferred language becomes even more important. In fact, Chapman argues that it can improve your understanding of each other, prevent arguments, and foster deeper love. 10 Simple Phrases That Keep You in Love The Receiving Gifts Love Language If you’re here, then either you know or suspect that one of your partner’s strongest love languages is the act of giving and receiving gifts. Or perhaps gifts are your love language and you’re simply looking for a better way to communicate your needs to your partner. Whatever the case, we’re breaking it all down for you. Of all the love languages, the act of gift giving is arguably the most often misconstrued. To some, it can seem greedy or as if the recipient is fixated on things versus love itself. That’s not the case. “If you or your partner’s love language is gifts, that means you feel loved [or that you’re demonstrating love] with a tangible item,” says Williams. “Whether that item is a tiny trinket from a thrift store, or a 50-foot sailboat is inconsequential. Either convey the same message: I was thinking about you when I saw this. You’re always on my mind.” In that sense, Williams explains that the true meaning of gift giving isn’t extravagance, it’s sentimentality. A person who feels loved through these items might cherish the gift, however small, more than another who speaks a different love language. Every time they see it, it will serve as a reminder that they are loved. Determining If Your Partner’s Love Language Is Gifts “We often speak the love language to our partners that we ourselves want to receive. Meaning, if your partner buys you an album two days after you talk about how much you love a new band, or gets you a subscription to a magazine they think you’d like, it’s likely that their love language is gift giving,” says Williams. Another good way to know if your partners love language is gifts is by gauging their reaction to presents. Williams says if they feel embarrassed when presented with a gift, it’s likely not their love language. If they’re highly enthusiastic, if they put the item on display, wear it every day, or gush to their friends about it, they likely feel very loved by the gesture. The most surefire way to find out if your partner’s love language is gifts, though, is to ask them. How to Know If You Are In a Healthy Relationship How to Satisfy Your Partner’s Gift-Giving Language If speaking the gifts love language doesn’t come naturally to you, it’s still important to try learning the language since it’s the one your partner speaks. “Just like you put a filter on an Instagram post, look at things in your daily life through the lens of ‘gift giving,’” suggests Williams. “If you pass a bakery every day on the way home from work, look at it through the lens of ‘My partner really feels loved when I bring them gifts’ and stop in for a pastry before heading home. They don’t have to be big purchases, and they don’t have to be all the time. They’re just little reminders that they’re always on your mind, and the tangible evidence to prove it.” Similarly, if your partner’s love language is gifts, then there are things you should avoid doing in order to prevent deep hurt. For example, if someone’s love language is “words of affirmations,” then hurling an insult will wound that person more than it might another. Similarly, if someone’s love language is physical touch and you withheld affection for days your partner would feel dejected. “The dark side of knowing each other’s love languages is that you also become equipped with the knowledge of how you might hurt your partner,” says Williams. In the case of someone who speaks gifts as their love language, not getting them a gift on an anniversary or special occasion would be acutely hurtful to them, as would approaching the gift-giving as more a chore than an opportunity.” In that sense, its just as important to be aware that certain behaviors might impact your partner more deeply than others. A Word From Verywell Though the majority of us have one or two dominant love languages, each of us technically speaks all five languages to some degree. It’s ideal that we speak all five languages to our romantic partnersâ€"physical affection, quality time, acts of service, kind words, and giftsâ€"while simply making sure to prioritize their preferred language. 7 Ways to Be Newlyweds After Years of Marriage

Reader Response to “They’Re Made Out of Meat.” Free Essays

Reader Resp†They’re Made Out of Meat†, written by Terry Bisson, is a breathtaking short story. The level of fluidity achieved by this unique author is unbelievable given the facts of the plot. The narrative, which consists entirely of dialogue between two characters, was written with such an artistic approach that it made the text relatively unputdownable. We will write a custom essay sample on Reader Response to â€Å"They’Re Made Out of Meat.† or any similar topic only for you Order Now During the entire story, the author brilliantly succeeds in masking the elusive reality of the storyline, which revolves around the themes of hypocrisy and rejection. As a result, the reader, who is likely unbeknownst of what is truly happening in the story, will ultimately feel an immense and unexpected shock in the final paragraphs of the narrative. A main theme in the story is carbon chauvinism. In other words, it is the reluctance of humans to accept the fact that extraterrestrial life may exist in other forms than it does on Earth. Life on Earth is largely carbon-based, which, in human theory, is the only kind of life possible in the Universe. However, in the story, we learn that the two characters are sentient beings capable of traveling faster than light, which automatically makes them non-cellular, as carbon-based beings are physically incapable of travelling at light speed. The author takes a paradoxical and humorous approach to reveal this theme, as it is the two extraterrestrials who think that cellular life is ridicule and that meat cannot have the physical ability to contain intelligence and conscience.Another recurring theme in the story is hypocrisy. The extraterrestrials in the story know that humans have been trying to contact them for hundreds of years, but they still decide to â€Å"erase the records and forget the whole thing†. However, the last sentence of the narrative infers that they really want to make contact with other species. This shows that the extraterrestrials are in fact hypocrites, and that last sentence can be exemplified as a Tu quoque. This intriguing short story can be compared to the episode â€Å"Devil in the Dark† in Star Trek. In this story, there is also the presence of a non-carbon-based life form, called the Horta, a highly intelligent silicon-based creature made almost entirely of pure rock. Another short story similar to â€Å"They’re Made Out of Meat† would be â€Å"A Martian Odyssey†, written by Stanley G. Weinbaum. In this story, alien personalities and civilizations are described to be as real as those of humans, a same portrayal that is used in the narrative written by Terry Bisson. A question that I kept asking myself while reading the story was what were those extraterrestrials made of. After an extensive analysis, I discovered that photons are the only particles that are capable of travelling faster than the speed of light, thus making them the only plausible substance that the beings can be made of.Another question that came to me while reading is why do the extraterrestrials think that it is absurd that meat can be both sentient and conscious. I suppose that it is most likely because that in their scientific theories, meat does not have the physical capability to contain intelligence. In conclusion, I can affirm that the author has written a wonderful and exhilarating short story that can trigger the reader’s attention from the beginning to the end. How to cite Reader Response to â€Å"They’Re Made Out of Meat.†, Papers

Theatrical Skills Essay Example For Students

Theatrical Skills Essay How Theatrical Skills were used at a particular moment to create a specific effect for the audience  On 17th December, I along with other students at SHSG saw the play Nation at the National Theatre in London. Nation was a romantic comedy with elements of adventure and thrill. Nation was performed in the Olivier Theatre, which was an arena; this was very useful throughout the play as it had a very large performance stage, which allowed the actors to make good use of space by spreading out. In Act One, the sea storm created a very scary and tense atmosphere by using many techniques such as lighting, props and sound. These techniques were all used to create different effects but the same scary atmosphere.  Lighting created a tense atmosphere for the audience by having the stage dim with hints of blue lights, which represented the sea. Then suddenly, by having flashes of bright lights shooting down at the stage created the effect of lightning and by them being unexpected and sudden scared the audience, which created a successful scary atmosphere. It was successful in creating a scary atmosphere as the key point in a scary atmosphere is trying to scare the audience and in Nation the director achieved this. The director used the dark stage and beaming lights to represent a sea storm, he succeeded in doing this, as the audience were able to identify a storm. We will write a custom essay on Theatrical Skills specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The use of props was also very successful in creating a scary atmosphere and portraying the sea storm. The rope was used to show the outline of the ship; this idea was very simple but very effective. The rope allowed the cast to easily change from one scene to another, yet the audience were able to identify that it was representing a ship. The cast also helped to make the atmosphere thrilling as when they swayed in sync, to look like they were in a boat; it was very eerie to watch. This was because the cast looked very unstable and it was unclear whether all of them would manage to stay in the boat. The Director intended to create this thrilling atmosphere so the audience could empathise what it was like to have been in the current situation. This scene was set down stage so it was very intimidating to watch as it was going on in front of the audience. Upstage there were three big electronic projecting screens which allowed the director to project images to help set the scene. During the sea storm there was video footage of men drowning with the colours blue and red surrounding them. This film automatically created a scary atmosphere as it allowed the audience to make a connection between this scene and the idea of death. Also when people are drowning they are completely helpless and are just waiting for death to impend on them, so here the director has created a sense of pity as the men are unable to do anything to save themselves or others. The director has also created a contrast in colours as blue is normally associated with the calmness of the sea and red is associated with death and danger. Throughout this moment sounds of crashing waves and deadly screams were being played which built up the tension and led to audience anticipating whose screams they were. This was successful in creating a scary atmosphere as when the scene went on the music got louder, building up tension until everything came to a sudden climax, leaving the audience suspicious.  Overall, this moment was very successful in using a variety of theatrical skills to create a scary atmosphere for the audience, especially the lighting as it was used to help the audience identify the time of day and the set.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay Example

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay Example Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay The CBT Model and the Narrative Therapy model Name: Institution: The CBT Model and the Narrative Therapy model One application of the Cognitive Behavioral Theory that might be used by a pastor in counseling or a therapy session is the A-B-C model (Yarhouse, 2008). In this approach, the family therapy works with individuals in the family to increase awareness on how irrational beliefs and distortions caused by certain actions or events serve as the foundation for their emotional distress. Through this approach, the family therapist can make the individuals in the family understand how the activating events (A) in a family relationship precede beliefs (B) that lead to consequent emotions (C). This approach can identify with the Christian family because it is in harmony with the principles of Christianity, which emphasize on the need to be aware of the consequences of one’s actions (Yarhouse, 2008). In conclusion, the beliefs in the A-B-C approach do not refer to the beliefs in Christianity; instead, they refer to beliefs that are activated by negative actions or events set in motion by an individual’s actions. I would use the A-B-C model because it applies the assumptions set in the behavioral family therapy model with an additional emphasis on an individual’s thoughts. This model puts the individual’s mental action into consideration by exploring its influence on an individual’s behavior (Yarhouse, 2008). To apply this model in counseling or a therapy session, a therapist simply adds cognitive components to the behavioral family therapy model. These cognitive components are usually in the form of irrational thoughts. With the cognitive components in place, the process of applying this model will be a systematic process that begins with formal assessment to determine the functional analysis and the baseline in the situation. Afterwards, the therapist will apply this technique in an attempt to arrive to a solution while putting into consideration the family’s beliefs (Yarhouse, 2008). The narrative therapy model does not put into consideration the ideas and thoughts that are derived by Christian families from the Holy Bible. This therapy model puts more emphasis on individual stories from families as compared to cultural narratives, which have been dominant for years and generations passed. This has been mainly because of postmodernism, which allows this theory to brush away any form of universal truths drawn from religious contexts (Yarhouse, 2008). Although the narratives from dominant cultures may appear far-fetched in their theoretical claims and philosophical commitments, this family therapy model is not correct in its assumption. It is preposterous to attempt to reduce a strong culture like Christianity into a mere perspective in the realm of family therapy. One cannot justify the denial of the existence of metanarratives with postmodernism because they would be contradicting themselves by unknowingly classifying postmodernism as a metanarrative at the same time (Yarhouse, 2008). In my opinion, there are many reasons as to why the narrative family therapy model can never fit into the Christian framework. For instance, this model will always challenge the fundamental beliefs and principles that Christianity has been built on and preserved for centuries and generations. Furthermore, the post modernistic approach in this model fails to provide room for the interaction between Christianity and other fields of study like science (Yarhouse, 2008). To many Christian families, the meaning of life is derived from a combination of Christianity and other forms of study that attempt to unravel the mystery behind life’s countless phenomena and an attempt to server such a relationship will always be futile. In conclusion, Christianity has always drawn a clear line between good and bad. Free Essay Samples (Excerpt) A considerable proportion of well-educated couples of the middle class prefer to have complete equality in money matters. A joint checking account is maintained, with each partner having free access to it after the regular, more or less fixed, monthly charges (such as rent, insurance, and savings) have been met. Such a system manifestly calls for complete mutual confidence, and if the income is moderate it calls for self-restraint as well. If either husband or wife is a spendthrift, the method fails; but if both are competent in the handling of money, have a healthy sales resistance, and are considerate of each other needs, this plan of handling the family purse is perhaps the most satisfying of all. It involves no galling even though tacit insinuation of superiority and inferiority, whether on grounds of honesty or competency. And if neither person draws a large check when the account is low without asking the other whether he is likely to have heavy or unusual expense before the en d of the month, there is little danger of one being "caught short" because of the other. There is a strong intimation that the husband will spend money wisely and the wife may not, but this assumption is unfair and unsound. Many wives are better managers than their husbands, and frequently the rent would not be paid if the husband did not turn over his wages to his wife. In many ways, women are more careful spenders than men; but given the same training and responsibility, there is no reason why either sex should excel the other in this matter... Market Segmentation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Market Segmentation - Essay Example Lastly, the company seeks for a unique marketing segment that is not being practised by their competitors. This plays a big role in enabling companies to achieve a high market share, thus generating a comfort factor since the buyers will see it as a market leader. Through this, most business entities are able to better their competitive positions and satisfy their customer needs (Burrows, 2010). For an adequate marketing strategy to take place, a manager has to determine and identify the boundaries within the market and with the help of a business plan, develop a clear definition of a business to be in operation. Then, the manager should get enough knowledge and all the relevant information about the goods and services provided by the competitors in relation to the basic requirements of the customers in the market. The company, therefore, would determine the methodology and variables to use in dividing its market into subsets. Research tools are introduced in the process of collectin g and analysing data with the purposes of identifying a homogenous segment which, at the same time, is heterogeneous to the other segments. Basing on the consumers’ behaviour, a company selects the variables that will assist it in creating a detailed profile of each distinct segment (Burrows, 2010). Then the marketing manager looks for the potential customer with needs and wants that require being satisfied in respect to the business they had identified in the previous steps. Finally a product and market plan is developed to make an appeal to a specific market segment. All these combined together will attract a customer to purchase a particular product that will satisfy his or her needs and wants. Market segmentation is considered as a decision making tool for most of the marketing managers in the selection of a target market for their goods and services. Product differentiation techniques have frustrated companies’ expectations since they were purposed to provide a va riety of products rather than offering different segments, therefore leading most of the companies to embrace the segmentation. Marketing managers use segmentation in defining the market, i.e. they are able to perceive their market from a consumer’s point of view rather than a manufacturer’s. Managers gain the knowledge and ability to rationalise policies for available commodities so that they can outshine their competitors by protecting their products from any competitive practice and also work towards achieving a high market share. They harmonise the different segments in a company by catering for the segments that are perceived to be more important, and minimising the competition between the goods and services within a company. This simply means that managers rely on the segmentation process to position ranges of their existing products (Croft, 1994). Since not all existing products can satisfy the needs of each segment, the managers identify the gaps and take an in itiative of launching a brand new or an already available commodity to solve the shortcoming. Companies with small distribution channels use segmentation to sell their goods and services in specific parts of a country. A marketing manager uses the GNP per capita and different behaviours of the customers in the area of concern to determine the marketing strategy to be used in meeting their needs. Demographic variable in market segmentation explains

Designing a Study Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Designing a Study - Assignment Example To test the hypothesis, the Wilcoxon signed rank tests would be the fitting test. This test examines whether the data available supports the assertion that a prolonged daily exercise length implies a faster rate of weight loss. The test has been used previously in similarly befitting roles. (Han et al. 2011) notes: We used two-sided Wilcoxon rank sum tests for differences in location for these variables as well as for age and years of education. To carry out the test, the researcher needs to calculate the differences in recorded weights before and after the study period. All weight losses will be noted with a plus sign and all gains by a minus sign. Because the positive results (those with plus signs) are the center of our study, we assign them the title k-observed, denoted as kobs. Then using the value of the smallest integer kÃŽ ± we shall calculate the rejection region for kobs. We then observe whether our kobs is contained in R, that is without the boundaries of the rejection region. If kobsЄR, we fail to reject the null hypothesis. Let us put our R at 4, just for illustration. If kobs=3, then we fail to reject the H0 owing to the earlier explanation that kobsЄR. Han, X., Rozen, S., Boyle, S. David Beckham :: Biography Biographies Bio

David Beckham David Robert Joseph Beckham OBE (born May 2, 1975) is an English footballer born in Leytonstone, London. He is a midfielder for Real Madrid and captain of the English national team. He is noted for the quality of his crossing and ability to hit free-kicks and corners, particularly at long-range free-kicks and also for his marriage to a Spice Girl. He has played most of his career for Manchester United. Although there are arguably many better current players in world football none are as famous. Manchester United 1995-2003 Beckham first signed a YTS (youth training scheme) contract (this is similar to an apprenticeship) with United in 1991, and made his League debut in 1995, aged 19. The next year he helped the side to the Premiership and FA Cup trophies and to their dominance of domestic football. In the 1998-99 season, he was part of the United team that won the "treble" - Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, a feat unprecedented in English football, which earned the club's manager, Alex Ferguson, a knighthood. In total, Beckham scored 86 goals in 397 games for Man United, a rate of roughly 2 goals every 9 games, highly commendable for a midfielder. Club Career Real Madrid 2003-present On June 17, 2003, Beckham signed a four-year contract with Real Madrid of Spain, potentially worth up to â‚ ¬35 million (Â £25 million, USD 41 million). Plus 2. Apart from benefiting from his football ability, this transfer gives the Spanish club an opportunity to profit from merchandising, especially in the Far East, where Beckham is enormously popular, and Manchester United have until now had the lion's share of interest. It is probably no coincidence that Beckham was transferred just before Real started a far-eastern tour, but it would be very unfair to say that his marketing potential alone was the only reason for his transfer. At the time of the announcement of his transfer to Real Madrid, Beckham and his wife (Victoria) were on a week-long tour of Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand promoting beauty products, chocolate, motor oil, and mobile phones, which it was reported would earn them more than the entire first year of his Real Madrid contract. (Western journalists are excluded from the Japanese "press conferences" organised by his sponsors because of the embarrassment they would cause him in the West.) He successfully completed the transfer on July 1 and was presented with the squad number of 23 on July 2.

American public attitude on science and technology

Throughout history, the public perception on science and technology has not been stable. It has changed constantly and the fluctuation on the attitudes is still evident today. It is important to note that the public perceptions on scientific and technological advancements vary from one society to another. Since the end of the Second World War, the first war to make use of sophisticated scientific technologies such as atomic bombs, there has been several scientific advancement and consequently changes in the public perception in the United States. This is as a result of the massive research that was prompted by the events of the Second World War and the subsequent tensions of the cold war era (Mindell, pg 1). The attitudes of the Americans on scientific and technological advancements have always had far reaching impacts (National Academy of Engineering, pg 1). It affects the level to which the federal government funds for scientific research and development, the number of people especi ally college student willing to pursue careers in research and development the application of the new and better technologies that have been developed and the improvement of existing technologies. There are varies factors that have been found to influence the perceptions and attitudes of the Americans towards certain technologies. These factors includes that knowledge about the specific technology held by the general public, optimisms of the technological advancement and the general public attitude towards the profession dealing with the technology. These factors have made comparison of attitudes and perceptions of societies from different backgrounds on certain scientific advancement difficult (Liao, pg 1).In the 1970s, there was a growing concern in the United States due to the increased negative perception of the public on science and technology. The public were slowly losing confidence on research and development when compared to the situation in the Second World War where the Am ericans had full confidence on the ability of science. These increased concerns were prompted by the increased environmental awareness. The public was increasingly getting aware of the impacts of air pollution and the negative consequences of technological advancement. There were reports on the mass media on the dangers associated with increased research and development of nuclear weapons and power plants, biotechnology research especially on the DNA, disposal of toxic industrial waste and massive use of pesticides and fertilizers in the plantations. Protests against science and technology were witnessed in the 1970s. This created a need for the National Science Board to embark on strategies of reducing the general cynicism towards science and technology in the United States (Pion and Mark, pg 303).Despite this, compared to other societies around the world, the American society’s attitude favor science and technology. Most of the Americans believe that technological advancemen t makes them healthier and comfortable. Majority of the Americans today believes the scientists’ main aim is to make life easier for the ordinary Americans. Moreover, they believe that advancement in technology and its applications in their daily lives are interesting and create more opportunities for the future generations. However, about half of the Americans believe that the modern society is over-dependent on science and technology. It is interesting to note that the more the public learn about the improvement in technology and become aware of its positive and negative effective, their attitude shifts towards favoring technological development. This explains the increased perception that though technological advancement may have harmful effects on the environment or degrade the sanctity of human life, the benefits outweigh the negative effects (Science and Engineering Indicators, Para 5).However, this does not mean there are no concerns among the public on the increased de pendence of science and technology among the Americans. The increased debates on climate change and global warming has been blamed to be associated with technological advancement in the second half of the twentieth century. But a good number of Americans believe science and technology is the solution to the environmental problems responsible for climate change. The confidence held by the Americans on science and technology is due to the perception that technology was essential in the establishment of the United States as a world superpower. The supremacy of the United States military in the Second World War, the Vietnam War, and the confidence during the cold war, the gulf war and the current 21st war in Middle East has been attributed to science and technology. Americans therefore consider research and development as their greatest achievement in the 20th century (Miller, pg 274).Despite the increased debate on the biotechnology especially genetically modified organisms, Americans a re still weighing the options with majority being opposed to adoption of biotechnological advancement in food production. Biotechnology is not the only field of technology where the Americans are keenly listening to scientists to weigh their options. They are also closely monitoring research on global warming, space exploration and nuclear energy. In conclusion, the public perceptions on science and technology in America have changed progressively since the end of the Second World War.It is important to note that the Americans are more confident with science and technology compared to other societies in the world. Moreover, the perception of the public largely depends on the knowledge about the technology. Work Cited Liao, Dan. , Jiang, Lingrui. , Palmer, David. , Liu, Xiaoming and McCutcheon, Allan. Prostitution - Thailand/Canada Essay - 2042 Words

Prostitution - Thailand/Canada Introduction Prostitution exists in almost all cultures and civilizations of the world today. Just as the cultures differ richly from one another, prostitution and prostitution policy vary greatly throughout the globe. Although the act of prostitution itself is widely similar all over, the policies that are affecting the sex trade are the most influential in shaping the unique and individual sex industries of different countries. This paper takes a look at two very different countries with very different cultural value systems within them. Not surprisingly their perspectives on prostitution differ significantly as well. These two nations are Canada and Thailand; classic examples of Western culture and†¦show more content†¦A common bawdy house is a place, which is occupied or used by at least one person for the purposes of prostitution. â€Å"Keeping† a bawdy house is an indictable offence liable to up to two years in prison (section 210 (1)). Being found in a bawdy house is a summ ary offence; the offender will receive a maximum term of six months in prison and/or a $2000 fine (sections 210 (2) and 211). Offences in relation to Prostitution focus mainly on acts committed in the public eye, including women attempting to stop moving vehicles, impeding the regular flow of pedestrians, or making an attempt to communicate with others with the intent to offer sexual services (section 213(1)), these are all considered summary offences. Although the written laws against prostitution are relatively clear, the overall goal of Canadian prostitution is not. There is no prohibition of the buying and selling of sexual services. This is what makes the Canadian law on prostitution unclear. A set of codes has been created so that it would be very difficult for a person to prostitute without breaking the laws, however the avenue of prostitution is still accessible. One may conclude from the criminal code that the government’s purpose in regard to prostitution is to keep it off the streets and out of the public eye. There are many large municipalities who facilitate the off-street trade by means of licensing it and regulating it. Essay about Needless Boundaries in Frosts Mending Wall

Needless Boundaries in Frosts Mending Wall As long as man has existed, territories and boundaries have been a part of life. Everyone finds a need to have a part of this earth that he can call his own. As soon as one finds his own space, he begins to set boundaries sometimes in the form of walls or fences. This creation of a wall raises the question with the poet, Robert Frost, as to what they are â€Å"walling in or walling out.† In his poem â€Å"Mending Wall,† Frost as the narrator participates in the repairing of a wall that he finds little purpose in. Frost suggests that besides himself there is â€Å"something† mysterious that doesn’t like walls. The neighbor continues to perform the task of repairing the fence to provide a division between him and the rest of the world. He apparently believes it necessary to ensure peaceful existence with a wall. The poet sees it as an unnecessary interruption in natural beauty. The poet sees this ritual of mending the wall as a humorous â€Å"game.† He compares his neighbor to a â€Å"old-stone savage armed.† He says he â€Å"moves in darkness† and only does what his father did before him. He also says, â€Å"he will not go behind his father’s saying, â€Å"†¦good fences make good neighbors.† The darkness is not from the shade trees that cover him but from his lack of understanding that the poet does not share his concern for restoring the wall. The poet fails to see the need for people and nature to separate from each other. Men should enjoy their natural surroundings without boundaries. The wall represents the lack of communication on the point between he and his neighbor. The neighbor is bound by tradition,

Visual Arts And Drama Integration Essay - 1307 Words

Art is important as it allows students learn to express and discover more about themself. The teacher’s role is to create the safe environment for them to take risks and create opportunities for them to express and discover more about themselves. It is important to have arts in teaching as it triggers creative actions and response by linking ideas, engaging, imagination and feelings (Ministry of Education, 2007). Furthermore, art can stimulate and enable learning, cognitive and academic development (Roy, Baker Hamilton, 2012). In my series of lesson plans, I have decided to integrate visual arts and drama. Visual arts allow students to freely express themselves through drawing, construction and painting (Dinham, 2014). Whereas drama is all about interactions, reactions and actions through exciting learning experience such as role-playing (Dinham, 2014; Ministry of Education, 2012). Through the visual art and drama integration, this student gain a sense of confidence in what t hey do, as they are creating an art piece and presenting it to everyone the drama. The topic I have chosen for visual arts is paper mosaics where students develop practical knowledge. I decide to choose this, as it can create a really engaging and relaxing environment. Block 4- Virginia Plan The fourth block Is showing representatives of Virginia coming up and having a plan that they believe will solve a ma]orally of the Issues. The purpose of the Virginia Plan was to protect the large states’ interests in the new government. Many smaller states disagreed with this. Block 5-Virginia Plan Problems This block represents the problems with the Virginia Plan. Obviously the main Issue which all the delegates could tell right away was the unfair advantage the larger states got. They had this idea that every state would only have two representatives which was not in the smaller states favor again. Block 6- New Jersey Plan The sixth block has delegates coming up to the stand to speak on behalf of the reports of the New Jersey Plan. In this block It also shows how Connecticut also had a plan yet it was ignored and was not even acknowledged. That is showed by the delegate representing the Connecticut Plan with his hand up yet not being acknowledged. The NJ Plan was brought up after the Virginia Plan, it was a way for the smaller states represent themselves and to also make sure that they got the liberties that they needed. Under the NJ Plan Congress had the power of setting and collecting taxes which some looked as good and others viewed as a negative. Block 7- Problems with the NJ Plan This block continues with the NJ Plan being discussed but people now are beginning to bring up the good and bad points on it, bad Including each state having the same number of representatives. Meaning a small group would have the same number as 1 OFF possible to pass laws some laws that not all the people would agree with. Block 8- The Great Compromise The eighth block shows The Great Compromise finally being adopted after a week and a half and tons of discussion on July 16th. The Great compromise was a ambition of the New Jersey Plan and the Virginia Plan featuring the fact that none of them had enough good things about them for it to be adopted by itself. It can also be known as The Connecticut Plan because while coming up with it Connecticut finally got a voice. Block 9- How Great compromise led to the constitution Well first off it had a big impact on all states. They all agreed that they should have two senators and that they should have an equal amount of representatives. Which was a plus that they finally agreed on that because in both plans they had different opinions on that topic. When it was passed it brought hope and spirit to the people of the U. S. That hope helped to lead the idea of the Constitution. Block 10-The â€Å"Real Revolution† After The Great Compromise being accepted finally it solved several issues and allowed the states to finally have a government that seemed reliable. The Real Revolution was more than the War of Independence. It began before the war with Britain and it lasted until after due to the fact that it was a revolution worth fighting for. So, this block shows people getting along and agreeing happily for the first time in a long time. How to cite Comic Outline, Papers

Christmas vs. Halloween free essay sample

Holidays are a time where families can come together and celebrate things that mean a lot to them. Spending time with your family is important to folks and holidays are the perfect way to gather the whole family up to celebrate something special. Every year we have tons of fun giving and receiving from others. Being a kid, the best part of all is receiving. Whether it be candy or video games or maybe even some socks from mom, it’s amazing no matter what. All holidays are exciting to me but two of my favorite are Christmas and Halloween. But which holiday is the best? Almost all holidays have fictional characters that represent them. Let’s start with Christmas. The absolute best part of Christmas for me was waiting to hear that big fat man in the red suit in my living room; Santa Clause of course! We would make â€Å"reindeer food† at school with oats and glitter and throw it in our yard at night. We will write a custom essay sample on Christmas vs. Halloween or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I remember so well throwing the food handful by handful saying each of the reindeer’s names as I threw it across the grass. â€Å"Here’s for you, Rudolph. † â€Å".. And this is for you Comet! † I think all kids have this image of the North Pole in their minds. I could always picture Mrs. Clause baking and all of the elves building toys up there. It makes the idea of Christmas that much more exciting. Halloween, on the other hand, has an entirely different approach. These characters are a lot more intimidating. A great deal of these fictional characters are also followed by a scary story, like The Headless Horseman galloping on his horse looking for a new head to call his own! When I think about Halloween I think of the Hocus Pocus witches flying by on their broomsticks in the sky, ghost flying creeping around corners, black cats running across the streets, and monsters hiding underneath my bed. Putting all of these characters into this holiday makes it so amusing and really keeps people on their toes. Every holiday has some kind of tradition. During Christmas time, the main tradition is to put up a Christmas tree and decorations with your family. Hanging up garland, draping ornaments up and down the tree to make it look like your own, throwing lights up on the house, placing your Christmas letters from family on top of the fireplace, dangling bows around every corner, and of course putting the final star or angel on the top of your very own Christmas tree. To follow more tradition, we also buy and wrap gifts for our loved ones. It is a time of year that we can really show our appreciation by giving. And don’t forget about that yummy Christmas dinner! So much is cooked and prepared for the dinner; turkey covered in brown gravy to all of the mouthwatering sides like carrots, sweet potatoes, and green beans along with some homemade sweet bread rolls. It’s almost like a second Thanksgiving! Halloween is not so sweet. One main tradition is finding the perfect pumpkin for you and your family and carving it together. There’s so many possibilities when carving a pumpkin because you can choose anything you would like. I’ve seen anything from funny faces to hideous monsters. One thing people do on Halloween and the weeks before it is go to haunted houses with friends and family! There’s nothing better than going into a place that is trying to scare the heebie-jeebies out of you! Most people take their children out â€Å"Trick or Treating†. Kids dress up in their favorite character and go door to door to gather candy from others in their neighborhood. â€Å"Halloween continues to be extremely popular with kids of all ages; 85 to 90 percent of U. S. children go trick-or-treating or engage in other Halloween festivities every year, and many adults also join in on the fun. † (Harris) Although it has become very unsafe over the years, it is a tradition that will never die down. Kids will always want their candy! Color themes are a big part of any holiday. Christmas is celebrated with the colors green, red, and white. Green Christmas trees, red mistletoes, and white snow. Nothing can beat these bright colors when they’re all in one decorative room together. Halloween uses more dark colors like black, purple, and orange. When you think of monsters and darkness you don’t exactly think of rainbows and sunshine. Colors can affect any point of view. Nobody is going to be scared of a hot pink monster with blue polka dots! Bring on the creepy dark colors! The meaning of a holiday is what matters most. â€Å"Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed holiday, celebrated generally on December 25 by millions of people around the world. † (Wikipedia) Not only is it a time to come together as a family, but a time to come together religiously as well. To celebrate what you believe in is important to almost anyone. Halloween began to celebrate the dead. â€Å"Halloween is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows; Day. It initiates the triduum of Hallowmas, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead. † (Wikipedia) The holiday may be scary but it is meant to be a celebration for our loved ones. In my opinion, Christmas is the best holiday. I love nothing more than to come together with my family to share gifts and love. This holiday is a very happy and cheerful holiday overall and it can really bring out the best in people. â€Å"This truly is the happiest time of the year, and a rush of excitement takes over every December. Everything seems a bit brighter this time of year, so one can never take a December day for granted. † (Bell) I celebrate it every year with the people I care most about and will carry on the tradition for as long as I can.

There are various recruitment agencies that are available to small businesses like Margie’s diner each with its benefits and drawbacks and this pap er looks at some of them with an aim of identifying the best based on some specific criteria. Recruitment agencies There are various recruitment agencies (public and private) that are available for both large scale and small businesses. Some of them are; Aerotek Commercial Staffing, ACG Staffing, American Recruitment Consulting Services, Applied Staffing Solutions, Alliance HR Network, Complete Career Center and CBS Personnel among others ( JobOpenings.net, 1998). According to my research I consider Applied Staffing Solutions to be the best recruitment agency due to the various benefits associated with it for instance effective infrastructure, qualified expertise as well as economies of scales which in return cuts down the costs to the employers. The employees provided by this organization, in different fields, are of high quality as they are usually prescreened and well tested. The customer service in Applied Staffing Solutions is approachable and the fees charged to the employers are relatively cheap due to economies of scales. The time the job posting is made available to the different candidates is also considerable making it possible to attain the best candidate for a given post. The screening process in the agency entails various forms of interviews. This agency aims at solving employment and staffing problems for both employers as well as those seeking for jobs through its services and would therefore be appropriate in assisting Margie’s attain the best Kitchen manager who will be able to manage the increasing demand or needs in diner ( Applied Staffing Solutions, 2011). All these should be used effectively incorporating the changes experienced in the ever changing market. I recommend that Margie’s dinner make use of the internet as a recruitment tool in posting the kitchen’s manager job vacancy on a variety of websites. The availability of various sites in which the organization can post the vacancy is advantageous as it allows for a wide target of jobseekers. The fact that the internet has gained a lot of popularity among people is also a guarantee that a large pool of individuals will get access to the advert making the chances of getting the right candidate high. It is also a cheap mode to both the organization in terms of posting charges with most of them being free, and the jobseekers in terms of access charges (Hodgetts Kuratko, 2000). Conclusion It is evident that recruitment is a very instrumental process in organizations and should therefore be given priority among other organizational processes. The different recruitment agencies play a great role in assisting employers and employees and their presence should never be undermined. In making the step, Margie’s diner should identify the most suitable recruitment agency and utilize the best recruitment tool. The Function of The

The Function of The The Function of â€Å"The† The Function of â€Å"The† By Mark Nichol I found it interesting, when researching this topic, that the definition for the in Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary is nearly as long as this post and that’s for just one set of functions for the word, as a definite article. The also functions, less often, as an adverb (â€Å"I like that one the best†) and, rarely, a preposition used in place of per (â€Å"Those cost ten dollars the dozen†). And why should anyone feel the need to look the up in the dictionary? Isn’t it obvious? When it comes to meaning, yes, the role of the in a sentence is clear. But it’s not always clear whether the cast of characters in the sentence must include that role. Consider the sentence â€Å"I looked out over the land.† The writer describes surveying a particular plot of land. However, â€Å"The price of land has gone down lately† omits the because no specific plot of land is being discussed; the topic is the concept of land in general. But notice that in these nearly identical sentences, the difference in meaning seems to be the reverse of the difference in the previous paragraph: â€Å"I poured water out of the pitcher† explains what was poured, whereas â€Å"I poured the water out of the pitcher† emphasizes where the water came from. Notice, however, that in those examples and the pair that follow, the is a marker for a second reference: â€Å"I put the shoes on and walked outside† emphasizes the particular pair of shoes, which presumably have already been referred to. â€Å"I put shoes on and walked outside† calls no special attention to the shoes; the sentence merely describes the writer’s routine preliminary to leaving the premises. Sometimes the presence or absence or the in a sentence is irrelevant; the person quoted could have employed either usage: â€Å"She’ll have the strawberry cheesecake† identifies the particular dessert a diner wishes to be served, one either visible to the speaker or listed on a menu a literal or implied second reference. â€Å"She’ll have strawberry cheesecake† means the same thing with the subtle difference that the speaker is not directly alluding to the dessert selection visible in the form of a slice or a reference in text. However, in the case of the pair of sentences about the shoes, the previous reference may be very important; these are magic shoes we’re reading about, for example. â€Å"I put shoes on and walked outside† presumably leaves the unusual footwear behind; â€Å"I put the shoes on and walked outside† moves the plot along. The is deliberately omitted in many types of usage. For instance, most references to countries (â€Å"Afghanistan,† â€Å"Zimbabwe†) need no definite article, nor do references to their citizens (â€Å"Afghanis,† Zimbabweans†), unless, again, a particular subgroup is in question (â€Å"The Afghanis in the tour group kept to themselves†). Exceptions include use of â€Å"the Netherlands† and similar geographically influenced names. The same rule applies to names of other geographical or geopolitical features (â€Å"Mount Everest,† but â€Å"the Himalayas†; â€Å"Hawaii,† but â€Å"the Hawaiian Islands†; â€Å"Lake Tahoe†, but â€Å"the Great Salt Lake†). Oddly, writers who would never make the mistake of omitting the before â€Å"Netherlands† or â€Å"Hawaiian Islands† frequently refrain from preceding names of organizations: â€Å"March of Dimes Foundation was founded in 1938.† Admittedly, some names do not merit the definite article, but they are usually obvious (â€Å"Project Reason,† â€Å"People for the American Way†). However, logic should override poor usage. The People for the American Way Foundation, associated with the organization named in the latter example, incorrectly self-identifies as â€Å"People for the American Way Foundation.† The rule of thumb is that any organizational name ending in a word referring to the entity (foundation, organization, project, etc.) requires the definite article, just as a generic reference such as â€Å"the foundation† merits it.
