Theatrical Skills Essay Example For Students

Theatrical Skills Essay How Theatrical Skills were used at a particular moment to create a specific effect for the audience  On 17th December, I along with other students at SHSG saw the play Nation at the National Theatre in London. Nation was a romantic comedy with elements of adventure and thrill. Nation was performed in the Olivier Theatre, which was an arena; this was very useful throughout the play as it had a very large performance stage, which allowed the actors to make good use of space by spreading out. In Act One, the sea storm created a very scary and tense atmosphere by using many techniques such as lighting, props and sound. These techniques were all used to create different effects but the same scary atmosphere.  Lighting created a tense atmosphere for the audience by having the stage dim with hints of blue lights, which represented the sea. Then suddenly, by having flashes of bright lights shooting down at the stage created the effect of lightning and by them being unexpected and sudden scared the audience, which created a successful scary atmosphere. It was successful in creating a scary atmosphere as the key point in a scary atmosphere is trying to scare the audience and in Nation the director achieved this. The director used the dark stage and beaming lights to represent a sea storm, he succeeded in doing this, as the audience were able to identify a storm. We will write a custom essay on Theatrical Skills specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The use of props was also very successful in creating a scary atmosphere and portraying the sea storm. The rope was used to show the outline of the ship; this idea was very simple but very effective. The rope allowed the cast to easily change from one scene to another, yet the audience were able to identify that it was representing a ship. The cast also helped to make the atmosphere thrilling as when they swayed in sync, to look like they were in a boat; it was very eerie to watch. This was because the cast looked very unstable and it was unclear whether all of them would manage to stay in the boat. The Director intended to create this thrilling atmosphere so the audience could empathise what it was like to have been in the current situation. This scene was set down stage so it was very intimidating to watch as it was going on in front of the audience. Upstage there were three big electronic projecting screens which allowed the director to project images to help set the scene. During the sea storm there was video footage of men drowning with the colours blue and red surrounding them. This film automatically created a scary atmosphere as it allowed the audience to make a connection between this scene and the idea of death. Also when people are drowning they are completely helpless and are just waiting for death to impend on them, so here the director has created a sense of pity as the men are unable to do anything to save themselves or others. The director has also created a contrast in colours as blue is normally associated with the calmness of the sea and red is associated with death and danger. Throughout this moment sounds of crashing waves and deadly screams were being played which built up the tension and led to audience anticipating whose screams they were. This was successful in creating a scary atmosphere as when the scene went on the music got louder, building up tension until everything came to a sudden climax, leaving the audience suspicious.  Overall, this moment was very successful in using a variety of theatrical skills to create a scary atmosphere for the audience, especially the lighting as it was used to help the audience identify the time of day and the set.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay Example

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay Example Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the Narrative Therapy model Essay The CBT Model and the Narrative Therapy model Name: Institution: The CBT Model and the Narrative Therapy model One application of the Cognitive Behavioral Theory that might be used by a pastor in counseling or a therapy session is the A-B-C model (Yarhouse, 2008). In this approach, the family therapy works with individuals in the family to increase awareness on how irrational beliefs and distortions caused by certain actions or events serve as the foundation for their emotional distress. Through this approach, the family therapist can make the individuals in the family understand how the activating events (A) in a family relationship precede beliefs (B) that lead to consequent emotions (C). This approach can identify with the Christian family because it is in harmony with the principles of Christianity, which emphasize on the need to be aware of the consequences of one’s actions (Yarhouse, 2008). In conclusion, the beliefs in the A-B-C approach do not refer to the beliefs in Christianity; instead, they refer to beliefs that are activated by negative actions or events set in motion by an individual’s actions. I would use the A-B-C model because it applies the assumptions set in the behavioral family therapy model with an additional emphasis on an individual’s thoughts. This model puts the individual’s mental action into consideration by exploring its influence on an individual’s behavior (Yarhouse, 2008). To apply this model in counseling or a therapy session, a therapist simply adds cognitive components to the behavioral family therapy model. These cognitive components are usually in the form of irrational thoughts. With the cognitive components in place, the process of applying this model will be a systematic process that begins with formal assessment to determine the functional analysis and the baseline in the situation. Afterwards, the therapist will apply this technique in an attempt to arrive to a solution while putting into consideration the family’s beliefs (Yarhouse, 2008). The narrative therapy model does not put into consideration the ideas and thoughts that are derived by Christian families from the Holy Bible. This therapy model puts more emphasis on individual stories from families as compared to cultural narratives, which have been dominant for years and generations passed. This has been mainly because of postmodernism, which allows this theory to brush away any form of universal truths drawn from religious contexts (Yarhouse, 2008). Although the narratives from dominant cultures may appear far-fetched in their theoretical claims and philosophical commitments, this family therapy model is not correct in its assumption. It is preposterous to attempt to reduce a strong culture like Christianity into a mere perspective in the realm of family therapy. One cannot justify the denial of the existence of metanarratives with postmodernism because they would be contradicting themselves by unknowingly classifying postmodernism as a metanarrative at the same time (Yarhouse, 2008). In my opinion, there are many reasons as to why the narrative family therapy model can never fit into the Christian framework. For instance, this model will always challenge the fundamental beliefs and principles that Christianity has been built on and preserved for centuries and generations. Furthermore, the post modernistic approach in this model fails to provide room for the interaction between Christianity and other fields of study like science (Yarhouse, 2008). To many Christian families, the meaning of life is derived from a combination of Christianity and other forms of study that attempt to unravel the mystery behind life’s countless phenomena and an attempt to server such a relationship will always be futile. In conclusion, Christianity has always drawn a clear line between good and bad. Therefore, the failure of the narrative family therapy model define in detail what differentiates a dysfunctional family from a functional one adds to the reasons why this model will never fit into a Christian framework. Free Essay Samples (Excerpt) A considerable proportion of well-educated couples of the middle class prefer to have complete equality in money matters. A joint checking account is maintained, with each partner having free access to it after the regular, more or less fixed, monthly charges (such as rent, insurance, and savings) have been met. Such a system manifestly calls for complete mutual confidence, and if the income is moderate it calls for self-restraint as well. If either husband or wife is a spendthrift, the method fails; but if both are competent in the handling of money, have a healthy sales resistance, and are considerate of each other needs, this plan of handling the family purse is perhaps the most satisfying of all. It involves no galling even though tacit insinuation of superiority and inferiority, whether on grounds of honesty or competency. And if neither person draws a large check when the account is low without asking the other whether he is likely to have heavy or unusual expense before the en d of the month, there is little danger of one being "caught short" because of the other. There is a strong intimation that the husband will spend money wisely and the wife may not, but this assumption is unfair and unsound. Many wives are better managers than their husbands, and frequently the rent would not be paid if the husband did not turn over his wages to his wife. In many ways, women are more careful spenders than men; but given the same training and responsibility, there is no reason why either sex should excel the other in this matter... Market Segmentation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Market Segmentation - Essay Example Lastly, the company seeks for a unique marketing segment that is not being practised by their competitors. This plays a big role in enabling companies to achieve a high market share, thus generating a comfort factor since the buyers will see it as a market leader. Through this, most business entities are able to better their competitive positions and satisfy their customer needs (Burrows, 2010). For an adequate marketing strategy to take place, a manager has to determine and identify the boundaries within the market and with the help of a business plan, develop a clear definition of a business to be in operation. Then, the manager should get enough knowledge and all the relevant information about the goods and services provided by the competitors in relation to the basic requirements of the customers in the market. The company, therefore, would determine the methodology and variables to use in dividing its market into subsets. Research tools are introduced in the process of collectin g and analysing data with the purposes of identifying a homogenous segment which, at the same time, is heterogeneous to the other segments. Basing on the consumers’ behaviour, a company selects the variables that will assist it in creating a detailed profile of each distinct segment (Burrows, 2010). Then the marketing manager looks for the potential customer with needs and wants that require being satisfied in respect to the business they had identified in the previous steps. Finally a product and market plan is developed to make an appeal to a specific market segment. All these combined together will attract a customer to purchase a particular product that will satisfy his or her needs and wants. Market segmentation is considered as a decision making tool for most of the marketing managers in the selection of a target market for their goods and services. Product differentiation techniques have frustrated companies’ expectations since they were purposed to provide a va riety of products rather than offering different segments, therefore leading most of the companies to embrace the segmentation. Marketing managers use segmentation in defining the market, i.e. they are able to perceive their market from a consumer’s point of view rather than a manufacturer’s. Managers gain the knowledge and ability to rationalise policies for available commodities so that they can outshine their competitors by protecting their products from any competitive practice and also work towards achieving a high market share. They harmonise the different segments in a company by catering for the segments that are perceived to be more important, and minimising the competition between the goods and services within a company. This simply means that managers rely on the segmentation process to position ranges of their existing products (Croft, 1994). Since not all existing products can satisfy the needs of each segment, the managers identify the gaps and take an in itiative of launching a brand new or an already available commodity to solve the shortcoming. Companies with small distribution channels use segmentation to sell their goods and services in specific parts of a country. A marketing manager uses the GNP per capita and different behaviours of the customers in the area of concern to determine the marketing strategy to be used in meeting their needs. Demographic variable in market segmentation explains

Designing a Study Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Designing a Study - Assignment Example To test the hypothesis, the Wilcoxon signed rank tests would be the fitting test. This test examines whether the data available supports the assertion that a prolonged daily exercise length implies a faster rate of weight loss. The test has been used previously in similarly befitting roles. (Han et al. 2011) notes: We used two-sided Wilcoxon rank sum tests for differences in location for these variables as well as for age and years of education. To carry out the test, the researcher needs to calculate the differences in recorded weights before and after the study period. All weight losses will be noted with a plus sign and all gains by a minus sign. Because the positive results (those with plus signs) are the center of our study, we assign them the title k-observed, denoted as kobs. Then using the value of the smallest integer kÃŽ ± we shall calculate the rejection region for kobs. We then observe whether our kobs is contained in R, that is without the boundaries of the rejection region. If kobsЄR, we fail to reject the null hypothesis. Let us put our R at 4, just for illustration. If kobs=3, then we fail to reject the H0 owing to the earlier explanation that kobsЄR. Han, X., Rozen, S., Boyle, S. David Beckham :: Biography Biographies Bio

David Beckham David Robert Joseph Beckham OBE (born May 2, 1975) is an English footballer born in Leytonstone, London. He is a midfielder for Real Madrid and captain of the English national team. He is noted for the quality of his crossing and ability to hit free-kicks and corners, particularly at long-range free-kicks and also for his marriage to a Spice Girl. He has played most of his career for Manchester United. Although there are arguably many better current players in world football none are as famous. Manchester United 1995-2003 Beckham first signed a YTS (youth training scheme) contract (this is similar to an apprenticeship) with United in 1991, and made his League debut in 1995, aged 19. The next year he helped the side to the Premiership and FA Cup trophies and to their dominance of domestic football. In the 1998-99 season, he was part of the United team that won the "treble" - Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, a feat unprecedented in English football, which earned the club's manager, Alex Ferguson, a knighthood. In total, Beckham scored 86 goals in 397 games for Man United, a rate of roughly 2 goals every 9 games, highly commendable for a midfielder. Club Career Real Madrid 2003-present On June 17, 2003, Beckham signed a four-year contract with Real Madrid of Spain, potentially worth up to â‚ ¬35 million (Â £25 million, USD 41 million). Plus 2. Apart from benefiting from his football ability, this transfer gives the Spanish club an opportunity to profit from merchandising, especially in the Far East, where Beckham is enormously popular, and Manchester United have until now had the lion's share of interest. It is probably no coincidence that Beckham was transferred just before Real started a far-eastern tour, but it would be very unfair to say that his marketing potential alone was the only reason for his transfer. At the time of the announcement of his transfer to Real Madrid, Beckham and his wife (Victoria) were on a week-long tour of Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand promoting beauty products, chocolate, motor oil, and mobile phones, which it was reported would earn them more than the entire first year of his Real Madrid contract. (Western journalists are excluded from the Japanese "press conferences" organised by his sponsors because of the embarrassment they would cause him in the West.) He successfully completed the transfer on July 1 and was presented with the squad number of 23 on July 2.

American public attitude on science and technology

Throughout history, the public perception on science and technology has not been stable. It has changed constantly and the fluctuation on the attitudes is still evident today. It is important to note that the public perceptions on scientific and technological advancements vary from one society to another. Since the end of the Second World War, the first war to make use of sophisticated scientific technologies such as atomic bombs, there has been several scientific advancement and consequently changes in the public perception in the United States. This is as a result of the massive research that was prompted by the events of the Second World War and the subsequent tensions of the cold war era (Mindell, pg 1). The attitudes of the Americans on scientific and technological advancements have always had far reaching impacts (National Academy of Engineering, pg 1). It affects the level to which the federal government funds for scientific research and development, the number of people especi ally college student willing to pursue careers in research and development the application of the new and better technologies that have been developed and the improvement of existing technologies. There are varies factors that have been found to influence the perceptions and attitudes of the Americans towards certain technologies. These factors includes that knowledge about the specific technology held by the general public, optimisms of the technological advancement and the general public attitude towards the profession dealing with the technology. These factors have made comparison of attitudes and perceptions of societies from different backgrounds on certain scientific advancement difficult (Liao, pg 1).In the 1970s, there was a growing concern in the United States due to the increased negative perception of the public on science and technology. The public were slowly losing confidence on research and development when compared to the situation in the Second World War where the Am ericans had full confidence on the ability of science. These increased concerns were prompted by the increased environmental awareness. The public was increasingly getting aware of the impacts of air pollution and the negative consequences of technological advancement. There were reports on the mass media on the dangers associated with increased research and development of nuclear weapons and power plants, biotechnology research especially on the DNA, disposal of toxic industrial waste and massive use of pesticides and fertilizers in the plantations. Protests against science and technology were witnessed in the 1970s. This created a need for the National Science Board to embark on strategies of reducing the general cynicism towards science and technology in the United States (Pion and Mark, pg 303).Despite this, compared to other societies around the world, the American society’s attitude favor science and technology. Most of the Americans believe that technological advancemen t makes them healthier and comfortable. Majority of the Americans today believes the scientists’ main aim is to make life easier for the ordinary Americans. Moreover, they believe that advancement in technology and its applications in their daily lives are interesting and create more opportunities for the future generations. However, about half of the Americans believe that the modern society is over-dependent on science and technology. It is interesting to note that the more the public learn about the improvement in technology and become aware of its positive and negative effective, their attitude shifts towards favoring technological development. This explains the increased perception that though technological advancement may have harmful effects on the environment or degrade the sanctity of human life, the benefits outweigh the negative effects (Science and Engineering Indicators, Para 5).However, this does not mean there are no concerns among the public on the increased de pendence of science and technology among the Americans. The increased debates on climate change and global warming has been blamed to be associated with technological advancement in the second half of the twentieth century. But a good number of Americans believe science and technology is the solution to the environmental problems responsible for climate change. The confidence held by the Americans on science and technology is due to the perception that technology was essential in the establishment of the United States as a world superpower. The supremacy of the United States military in the Second World War, the Vietnam War, and the confidence during the cold war, the gulf war and the current 21st war in Middle East has been attributed to science and technology. Americans therefore consider research and development as their greatest achievement in the 20th century (Miller, pg 274).Despite the increased debate on the biotechnology especially genetically modified organisms, Americans a re still weighing the options with majority being opposed to adoption of biotechnological advancement in food production. Biotechnology is not the only field of technology where the Americans are keenly listening to scientists to weigh their options. They are also closely monitoring research on global warming, space exploration and nuclear energy. In conclusion, the public perceptions on science and technology in America have changed progressively since the end of the Second World War.It is important to note that the Americans are more confident with science and technology compared to other societies in the world. Moreover, the perception of the public largely depends on the knowledge about the technology. Work Cited Liao, Dan. , Jiang, Lingrui. , Palmer, David. , Liu, Xiaoming and McCutcheon, Allan.
